Sometimes a number doesn’t mean too much until you put it into context.
As the athletics in the Commonwealth Games is currently being aired on our screens we are constantly in awe of records being broken.
What better way to incorporate and apply some maths skills?
Miss Lloyd has been working with our Year 7 students who have been given the challenge to investigate a Commonwealth record. Making maths meaningful through the use of technology has been a goal of Nicole's. Skills learned from Reality Composer have enable the students to create an augmented image. They have compared themselves relative to the distance or height of a record they investigated.
Some of the skills used in this activity have been:
inquiry
research
converting units
creativity
measurement
collaboration
Below are some images showing some records from long jump, high jump
Further curiosity lead some students to create other augmented images.
Below is a netball and basketball AR.
This activity has given our students an opportunity to draw on their knowledge and apply it in a 'real' context. Creating digital images to scale and actually immersing themselves into the scene has become more meaningful to students. Now, when we see New Zealander Imogen Ayris pole vault a height of 4.25m to achieve a Bronze medal, we can can appreciate how high this actually is.
