As part of the English curriculum, through the years at school, students are asked to analyse the work of others.  Text, movies, and plays are unpacked and the meaning or symbolism behind phrases, scenes and paragraphs are discussed.  We consume and use the work of others to help us gain knowledge and understanding.

In EPIC, a cross-curricular course with a focus on student-directed learning, a group of year 12 students have flipped this whole concept with the support of Miss Beaumont. Having created documentaries last year for their Media Studies projects, this year they wanted to create something that they would want to watch themselves. Teenagers are renowned for watching content online and music videos are some of the most common content that is viewed.  These girls have utilised their knowledge about what makes a great music video, in addition to the analysis skills they have learned through years of English study, to create their own stunning pieces of work.

The girls have extended their skills in movie making. It is evident that they clearly understand effective ways in which to tell a story visually.  What is even more impressive is that they have used originally composed pieces of music from other students and utilised the skills of their peers as dance performers.  Each music video has been given much thought about the lyrics and what narrative is being told through these verses.  The musical pieces evoke emotion and with clever storyboarding, the directors have used a variety of shots and angles to capture images that give the viewer a visual feast.  These student compositions of music and images have used a variety of film techniques and we are very proud that this group of girls are now using technology to create content of a very high quality for others to enjoy.
